it would seem that Italian furniture maker Poltrona Frau has triumphed at taking up daunting task of re-creating the albero, an iconic floor-to-ceiling free-standing bookcase first conceived in the 1950s by the late gianfranco frattini.
today, the updated albero remains the centerpiece of any room it stands in. serving both as a stimulating artisanal installation and a highly functional storage system, it features a center pole which holds any combination of 8 – 12 rectangular cube shelf units layered at various heights. the pole, extendable up to 11 feet, also sports a 360° swiveling function that provides enhanced versatility, functionality and aesthetic character to the albero.
albero has been mentioned in “The Top 10 Moments at Milan Design Week” of the new york times.
gianfranco frattini (1926 – 2004)
